Did you know that plant protein powders are as effective as whey protein but are w(h)ay healthier?
Ellen Kok, our orthomolecular nutritionist, recommends that you use additional plant protein to increase lean muscle mass and speed up your body’s recovery.
The truth is that...
Conventional whey protein powders are a by-product of cheese production and contain often harmful hormones (rBGH), steroids or antibiotics. Most protein supplements contain artificial ingredients (to flavor and sweeten) that may promote sugar cravings, glucose intolerance, fat gain and allergic reactions.
Protein is made up amino acids - the building blocks of your muscles and body. There are 9 essential amino acids, which you have to consume through food as your body can’t produce them on its own.
Plant-based protein can provide all of these essential amino acids when two different sources are combined (eg. rice and pea protein). In a 8 week study (published in the Nutritional Journal) about the performance of plant protein and whey protein, no difference in improvement of body composition and exercise performance between the two proteins was found.
Plant protein, however, does not contain any of the harmful or artificial ingredients that whey contains. It contains micronutrients that increase the absorption of protein in the body.
Micronutrients that aid in a faster recovery after a workout by reducing inflammation and stress in the body are magnesium, potassium, zinc, vitamin A, B, C, D and E.
